Thunder At A Glance – 06 September 2018

img_4063Royce Young (ESPN) on Mo Cheek’s relationship with Russell Westbrook: “For Westbrook, it has always been about controlled chaos, like Pecos Bill trying to rope the cyclone. Cheeks is often the lasso, the intermediary between the method and the madness.”

Ryan Harris (Welcome To Loud City) on whether the Thunder’s bench improved enough: “Ideally, the Thunder would be able to rest Russell Westbrook and Paul George at the same time and not get killed. The additions to the bench over the offseason were nice, but the younger guys from last seasons squad need to take a step forward this year as well. Right now, it isn’t 100% clear who will start between Jerami Grant and Patrick Patterson. For this post, I’ll assume Patterson is on the bench, though I think both guys will get their opportunity to start.” Continue reading Thunder At A Glance – 06 September 2018

Thunder At A Glance – 05 September 2018

img_4063Nick Gallo (OKCThunder.com) interviews Abdel Nader on his experiences since becoming a member of the Thunder: “Not long after the trade this offseason that brought him to Oklahoma City, Abdel Nader made a surprise first-place showing in Paul George’s celebrity fishing event. A couple weeks later, the newest Thunder forward was standing on the pitcher’s mound Kauffman Stadium as a part of the Thunder Night at the Kansas City Royals. Neither angling nor baseball are passions of Nader – he’s more of a soccer guy – but the newcomer small forward is doing all he can to jump into this Oklahoma City Thunder experience headfirst.”

The Thunder announces it’s 2nd annual technology partnership with eight entrepreneurial start ups around OKC: “The program provides free space, resources, corporate perks and an impressive mentor network from in and out of state business leaders, investors and influencers. At the end of the 12-week program, the founders will have an opportunity to present their plans to the investment and business community in Oklahoma and across the U.S.” Continue reading Thunder At A Glance – 05 September 2018

Thunder At A Glance – 04 September 2018

img_4063On the new NTTB Podcast, we discuss the waiving of Kyle Singler, the salary cap implications associated with that move, and preview the Central Division.

Joseph Zucker (Bleacher Report) on Kevin Durant’s initial reaction when the Thunder drafted Steven Adams: “Instead, Adams was the choice. He spent one year at Pittsburgh, averaging 7.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocks. While Adams flashed plenty of potential, many assumed he’d need a year or two of seasoning before he could contribute to the Thunder in a meaningful way.”

Kaushik Turlapaty (SportsKeeda) looks back at the top 10 scoring efforts in Russell Westbrook’s career.  Continue reading Thunder At A Glance – 04 September 2018

Weekend Programming

We may never see Kyle Singler on an NBA court ever again. Kyle was a good dude and he had a good heart. Unfortunately, he didn’t pan out to be a good basketball player. Especially not one earning nearly $5 million a season. Here’s a send off to Kyle Singler. Fare the well, my eccentric friend.

Thunder At A Glance – 31 August 2018

img_4063Erik Horne (NewsOK) on the Thunder waiving and stretching Kyle Singler: “By waiving Singler on Thursday, the Thunder beat the Friday deadline to use the stretch provision and have it apply to this season. The stretch provision allows the Thunder to stretch out Singler’s guaranteed money remaining over the next five seasons. The Thunder will have close to $1 million in dead money on its cap until the 2023-24 season, which should do minimal damage to its salary based on NBA salary cap projections.”

Ben Stinar (Amico Hoops) interviews Anthony Morrow who had some interesting things to say about Russell Westbrook: “Morrow also sees Westbrook as much more than just a point guard. “I used to tell (Westbrook) and people in the organization, that he really doesn’t have a position,” said Morrow, who finished 2017 with the Chicago Bulls but is now a free agent. “He’s really just a basketball player.” Continue reading Thunder At A Glance – 31 August 2018

Thank you, David West

david-west-okc

On Thursday morning, two-time NBA champion David West announced his retirement from the NBA. West retires from the game as a two-time All Star, with per game averages of 13.6 points and 6.4 rebounds. His ability to step out and hit the mid-range jumper, while also being a banger in the post became the archetype for big men in this pace and space era of today’s NBA.

West will likely be remembered for his time with the Indiana Pacers or the Golden State Warriors. But it’s where he started his career that has the most impact for Oklahomans. While Chris Paul was Oklahoma City’s first superstar, West was OKC’s first cult hero. Take the first eight seasons of Russell Westbrook (the ultimate sidekick) and merge those with the no-nonsense play of Nick Collison, and you had David West to a tee.  Continue reading Thank you, David West

Thunder At A Glance – 30 August 2018

img_4063Jeff Siegel (UPROXX) on the crucial role Steven Adams plays on the Thunder: “While Westbrook certainly has moments in which he eschews his defensive responsibilities in favor of getting to the glass, there’s no ignoring the fact that letting their point guard grab and go immediately is a positive for the Thunder as a whole.”

Nick DePaula (ESPN) on the crazy colorways that are coming your way this season: “For the first time in league history, the NBA will allow players to wear sneakers of any color at any point during the upcoming season, league sources confirmed. The rule change is part of the NBA’s ongoing effort to allow its players to be expressive on the court.” Continue reading Thunder At A Glance – 30 August 2018

Thunder At A Glance – 29 August 2018

img_4063Cody Taylor (OKC Thunder Wire) on the Thunder having three of the highest salaries in the league: “The Thunder are among seven teams with three players that are inside the top 50 in salary for the 2018-19 season, including the Celtics, Rockets, Grizzlies, Timberwolves, Raptors and Wizards.”

Anath Pandian (24/7 Sports) interviews Enes Kanter: “Yeah, because I remember from Day 1, not just the whole [Thunder] organization, but the people here, the fans, it was like home for me. Because I did not have a home.” Continue reading Thunder At A Glance – 29 August 2018

Thunder At A Glance – 28 August 2018

img_4063Brett Dawson (NewsOK) on the Thunder’s signing of Clemson star Donte Grantham: “The 6-foot-8 Grantham averaged 14.2 points and 6.9 rebounds as a senior at Clemson, but his season was cut short on Jan. 20, when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.”

The Thunder’s G-League affiliate, the Blue, released their regular season schedule on Monday.  Continue reading Thunder At A Glance – 28 August 2018
