NTTB Thunder Rumblings – 16 July 2018

img_4063Brett Dawson (NewsOK) on Thunder summer league (and Blue) coach Mark Daigneault: “He learned basketball from Jim Calhoun, for whom he worked as a student manager at UConn, and Ralph Willard, who hired him as an assistant at Holy Cross, and from Billy Donovan, who brought him on at Florida as a graduate assistant and ultimately followed him to Oklahoma City.”

Erik Horne (NewsOK) looks at the rotational players for the Thunder during summer league: “Diallo shouldn’t have lasted until the No. 45 pick in the draft. In Las Vegas, the 19-year-old showcased elite athleticism, was efficient (20-of-41 shooting), rebounded well (4.8 per game) for 6-5, and showed the ability to handle the ball on the fast break. Could he make a Thunder roster that wants to play faster? The Thunder minimized Diallo’s responsibility on offense in Las Vegas and he needs to continue to improve his perimeter shot, but purchasing his draft rights from Charlotte was a nice, low-risk play by Sam Presti.”

Dawson (NewsOK) on Nerlens Noel looking to redeem himself this season: “I definitely want to bring my dog out,” Noel said last week after watching a Thunder Summer League game from a courtside seat. “It’s been a while. It comes in spurts, the situations I was in. But I want to have it out on a nightly basis, playing with that energy and that joy.” It’s not the dog he’s best known for lately.”

Dawson (NewsOK) on Daniel Hamilton’s quest to make to the NBA: “But as Hamilton works to try and make the Thunder roster — he spent last season on a two-way deal, splitting time between the NBA club and the Blue, its G League affiliate — his education at point guard could prove significant. Last season with the Blue was his first as a full-time point guard, and it expanded his understanding of the game, he said.”

Michael Scotto (The Athletics) looks at Hamidou Diallo in summer league: “Diallo was selected No. 45 overall in the draft by the Brooklyn Nets and was sent to the Hornets as part of the Dwight Howard and Timofey Mozgov trade before Charlotte flipped him to the Thunder for a 2019 second-round pick and cash. It all happened before he stepped foot on an NBA court.”

Nick Gallo (OKCThunder.com) looks at Daniel Hamilton and his effect on the Thunder’s summer league team: “Over the course of the four games in Vegas thus far, Hamilton’s shooting stroke has been off kilter, and he’s still finding the balance on his drives to not get caught in traffic. But in 26.0 minutes per game, Hamilton has racked up averages of 8.8 points, 9.3 rebounds and 7.0 assists. The Thunder has aimed to transition Hamilton to a lead guard role, and that’s what Hamilton has focused on accomplishing.”

Adam Zagoria (Flo Hoops) on Russell Westbrook and Victor Oladipo looking at their teams battle in the Nike EYBL: “For the final, Westbrook sat courtside supporting and encouraging his team, which played its first year on the Nike circuit. Takeover alumnus Victor Oladipo also sat courtside cheering on his squad.”
